Unison privacy policy
Effective date: October 1, 2026
Unison ("the app") is published by Thomas Difiore ("we"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use Unison.
The short version
Unison does not collect or sell personal data, and never shares anything with advertisers. The only thing we ever receive is anonymous progress statistics, and only if you choose to share them. Your singing is analyzed on your iPhone. What the app stores stays on your iPhone and, if you leave iCloud backup on, in your own private iCloud storage, which only you can access.
Microphone and voice
Unison uses your iPhone's microphone only while you are doing an exercise (a voice check, a drill or a voice sample), to measure the pitch of your singing in real time. This audio is processed on your device and never uploaded. Your most recent practice attempt is kept in memory only, so you can play it back ("Your take" and "You, in tune"); it is replaced by your next attempt and discarded when you close the exercise. The only recordings Unison saves are your voice sample and your progress clips, described below.
During the voice check (and if you choose to re-record it later), Unison saves a short recording of you singing "ah" (up to about ten seconds). It is used to play exercises back to you in your own voice. The sample is stored in the app's private storage on your device (and in your own iCloud backup, if it is on) and is never transmitted to us or anyone else.
Progress clips and before-and-after videos
If you choose to record a progress clip, Unison saves a short recording (a few seconds) of you singing one line, "Happy birthday to you", along with its pitch line and score, so you can compare how you sound over time. Clips are stored only in the app's private storage on your device. Unison keeps your first clip and up to eleven more recent ones, deleting older clips automatically; recording again on the same day replaces that day's clip.
If you choose to make a before-and-after video, it is created on your device from your first and latest clips and kept in temporary storage. It leaves your device only if you share it yourself, using the share sheet, to a destination you choose.
Leaderboards (optional)
If you turn on Leaderboards (Settings › Leaderboards, or Awards › Join leaderboards), Unison sends your scores (for example, your best score on each song, your longest streak and your technique records) to Apple's Game Center, which shows them on leaderboards alongside your Game Center nickname. Game Center is run by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. If you allow it, Unison shows your Game Center friends' nicknames and scores next to yours; it displays them straight from Game Center and does not store them. Unison never sends recordings or audio. You can turn Leaderboards off at any time; Game Center settings in iOS control your nickname and visibility.
Friend challenges: when you choose to challenge a friend, Unison makes a link containing the name you type, the song or exercise and your score, and you send it with whatever app you pick (Messages, for example). Unison sends nothing itself. The link's details sit after the "#" in the address, so the challenge web page reads them in your friend's browser and they are never sent to our web server. Challenges you receive are kept on your phone only.
Practice data
Unison stores your voice range, voice-check results, practice history, settings and daily singing time on your device so it can adapt your training. This data is never transmitted to us, except as part of the optional anonymous statistics described below.
iCloud backup
Unless you turn it off (Settings › Back up to iCloud), Unison saves a copy of your practice data and your voice sample to your own private iCloud database (Apple's CloudKit), so a new phone or a reinstall can restore your progress. It is stored in your iCloud account under Apple's privacy policy; we cannot see or access it. Progress clip recordings are not included. Turning the backup off, or choosing Settings › Delete all my data, deletes the iCloud copy too.
Anonymous progress statistics (optional, off unless you turn it on)
If you choose "Share anonymously" (offered once after your first weekly solo check, and in Settings › Share anonymous stats), Unison sends us anonymous numbers about your practice, at most once a day, so we can measure whether Unison improves singing and which parts of the training work best:
- what the voice check found (singer type, findings, voice type, range size and its measurements in cents);
- your voice-check score and weekly solo scores, each with the number of days since the voice check;
- how many sessions and minutes you practiced each week, how well practice went with and without help, by reference voice and guidance step;
- which kinds of notes you tend to miss (high or low, rising or falling, jump size), in cents;
- plays and best scores per song, first and best technique results, harmony scores;
- whether reminders are on, your longest streak, badge count, how many friend challenges you answered, and the app version.
It is stored in Apple's CloudKit service under a random number created for this purpose. It contains no name, email, device identifier, location or recordings, and no dates of your practice (only days counted from your voice check). Apple's service also records when the record was last updated and attaches an anonymous identifier for your iCloud account that we can't use to find out who you are; we don't use either to identify anyone. The app shows you exactly what would be sent before you agree. Turning it off deletes your record; so does Settings › Delete all my data. We use it only to evaluate and improve Unison, and may publish aggregate results (for example, "singers who practiced four times a week gained 20 points"), never individual records.
Reminders and widget
If you turn on practice reminders, Unison schedules notifications on your device, worked out from your own practice history. If you add the Unison widget, the app shares your streak, solo score and level with it through a folder on your device. Neither sends anything off your phone.
Purchases
Subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive your payment details. The app checks your subscription status using Apple's StoreKit framework on your device.
Analytics, advertising and tracking
Unison contains no advertising, crash-reporting or third-party analytics software, and does not track you across other apps or websites. The optional anonymous statistics above are the only usage data we receive, and only with your consent.
Backups
If iCloud Backup or computer backups are turned on for your device, the app's stored data (including the voice sample and progress clips) may be included in those backups, under Apple's policies and your own settings.
Your choices
- Export: Settings › Export my data creates a copy of your stored practice data (scores, history and the pitch lines of your progress clips, but no audio) and hands it to the share sheet; nothing is sent unless you choose where it goes.
- Delete: Settings › Delete all my data permanently removes your voice sample, progress clips, before-and-after videos, results and history from the device, your iCloud backup, and your anonymous statistics record if you shared one. Scores you posted to Game Center stay with Apple under your Game Center account. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your phone; your iCloud backup stays (so a reinstall can restore it) until you choose Settings › Delete all my data or remove it in iOS Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Storage. Deleting data doesn't cancel a subscription; you can do that in your Apple Account settings.
- Microphone: you can turn off microphone access at any time in iOS Settings › Unison. The app can't run exercises without it.
Children
Unison is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, for example because we add optional cloud features, we will update this page and the effective date and, where required, ask for your consent in the app first.
